Rotary's need some rapping to keep them clean of carbon. Also use some royal purple injector atomizer or lucas fuel system cleaner. The reason I say this, other then a lot of research, is that My 2005 RX8 would take up to ten tries to star, hot or cold, after I baught it used. My only idea about what happened is that it had some stubborn carbon bould-up and it suddenly came loose. Morale of the story, use those high RPM's as often as you safely can, and keep everything clean.
Your rotary engine should start and stop just like any other conventional engine. Early signs of hot-starting problems will be prevailant in a delayed starting when hot. The only way to accurately determine the exact cause of hot-starting problems, is to have your engine hot compression tested by a rotary specialist (such as ourselves) or a Mazda dealer. The first option, to fit a new starter motor on a dying engine is not recommend. Good RX-8 and rotary specialists are few and far between – so don’t be afraid to travel!

i just recently got the same issue.. it is a pain in the ***! i did this maybe 10 times and it would not stay at a constant rpm. so i tried to reset [using the brake pedal with key ON position] and it kind of helped. [made sure the connection was tight]- First time this has ever occurred on my car that i can recall. other things to note-every time i start the car, i here 3 beeps and the air bag light flashes and goes away, but only when starting the car.
