The Mitsubishi Lancer - named after a soldier of the cavalry regiment in Europe's knightly age-debuted on the world stage in 1973. Styled for superior aerodynamic drag and a robust monocoque chassis for increased performance, the very first Lancer was powered by engines using Mitsubishi Clean Air technology. It was the first 1973 model to be certified as having a low-pollution engine by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. After nearly three decades and a successful run in Europe and Asia, the Lancer launched in the United States in 2001, powered by a 2.0-liter engine producing 120 hp and 130 lb-ft of torque.
The base Lancer is an inexpensive economy car, however, while the Lancer Evolution is its more mature and expensive big brother. Well Mitsubishi has announced that it will be pricing the latest iteration of the Lancer Evolution from $34,000, which will get you the GSR model with a five-speed manual. The top-o-da-line Lancer Evo MR that comes equipped with Mitsu's new six-speed dual clutch cog swapper will base at... gulp... $39,000. Inside Line reminds us that the previous Lancer Evo IX started at $28,679, which is a long way away from the new model's base price. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution ended production for good last year, though new examples can still be found on dealer lots. Look hard enough, and you might find a new Evo IX, but be prepared to shell out a lot. This brand-new 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX MR just sold for $138,000 on eBay. It appears that this Evo was purchased by California dealer South Coast Mitsubishi and put into storage for 11 years. And for what it's worth, the dealer has a regular 2006 Lancer listed for $3000.
