True production begins after the merger of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Mitsubishi Aircraft Co. in 1934. Two years later, Mitsubishi would enter the American market under its own name with the Tredia sedan, the Cordia and the Starion coupe. In 1995, Mitsubishi Motors changed its name to the current on from DSM as it was previously known on the American market. A new breed of cars, revitalized models and forward thinking was what brought Mitsubishi back on track.
Mitsubishi Canada has released teaser images of a Mirage sedan ahead of the 2014 Montreal Auto Show--which has its press day January 16--which popped up on the Mirage Forum. If it makes it to the U.S., the Mirage G4 sedan would presumably have the same powertrain as the current Mirage five-door hatchback. With that thrifty three-cylinder, the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage five-door hatchback achieves the highest fuel-economy rating of any non-hybrid on the market.
The Mitsubishi Mirage minicar has been an unexpected sales success for the Japanese carmaker, which has struggled in the U.S. market. The Mirage sedan will arrive in showrooms later this year, Mitsubishi executives confirmed to Wards Auto in a recent interview. Besides sporting a trunk, the Mirage sedan sold outside the U.S. also features somewhat different front end styling to the hatchback.
