The TOM'S GR86 Turbo was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon in mid-January. The TOM'S GR86 Turbo gets a bespoke aerokit. So as we can see, the main reason why Toyota has not offered an official in-house turbocharged GR86 is to keep cost down.

2022 Toyota GR86 Finally a Turbo

Toyota is filling out its sports car portfolio with another generation of the 86 sports car, now renamed GR86. After years of pleading from the public, Toyota and Subaru are finally giving the GR86 a turbocharger. The 86 remains the entry point, the new turbocharged four-cylinder GR Supra 2.0 occupies the middle of the ladder, and the turbocharged I-6 GR Supra 3.0 is the top rung. To reinforce the family connection, the 86 gets its third name change—from Scion FR-S to Toyota 86 and now to GR86. Before the industry slowed to a crawl, the GR86 was expected to premiere in the summer of 2021.

Toyota Built a Handful of GR86s With Turbo GR Corolla Engines

Enthusiasts have been begging Toyota for a turbocharged 86 for nearly a decade now. Well, Toyota is finally giving in and building turbocharged GR86s... but not for production. Toyota confirmed to Road & Track it has built a small batch of GR86s powered by its G16E-GTS engine, the turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-three that powers the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. The cars, assembled by the company's Gazoo Racing division, aren't being used as production prototypes, however. Instead, they're being tested for future racing applications in Japan and the development of synthetic fuels, according to CarSales.
