Crossovers are definitely in trend today simply because they offer more versatility to their owners, and car manufacturers gladly capitalize on this trend. The sub-compact car segment in Japan offers a lot of cool crossover-ish models and one of them is a modern version of the legendary mini 4×4 Daihatsu Rocky (also sold under Toyota Raize name in Japan). It barely has anything to do with its boxy body-on-frame ancestor, yet it still has an all-wheel-drive to have fun with! This little crossover is powered by a series of small-displacement 1.0 – 1.2L fuel-efficient engines mated to either a 5-speed manual or D-CVT transmission. i know a few people who bought jimnies coz it was cute. they don't go off-roadbut are penalized by the poor ride qualityAWD cars are now quite capable off-road. basically it's all software which actuates the abs module to brake the wheel that loses traction. btw the jimny does this too coz it lacks a "real" diff lockso an awd raize w/ 200mm ground clearance and decent approach angle could take you a lot further than a fwd crossover. most people don't really need a 4x4 and all the cons that go w/ it
