The third-gen Toyota Avanza MPV has made its global debut in Indonesia ahead of going on sale in international markets. The third-gen MPV gets some big changes over its predecessor, including a new platform that sees the MPV transition from rear- to front-wheel drive. Also revealed alongside is its sportier sister model, the Toyota Veloz. The new generation of the Toyota Avanza, Toyota Veloz, and Daihatsu Xenia that were unveiled in Indonesia are essentially the same car in slightly different flavors. All three models are based on Daihatsu’s DNGA platform – a budget version of Toyota’s own TNGA architecture – which also underpins the Toyota Raize / Daihatsu Rocky B-SUV siblings. More specifically, the Toyota Avanza and the Daihatsu Xenia are almost identical with differences limited to the front bumper, grille, badges, and trim pieces between the taillights and on the decorative diffuser. The Toyota Veloz on the other hand differentiates itself more as a sportier and more premium model thanks to the redesigned bumpers and taillights. Pricing starts from 190,900,000 rupiah ($13,392) for the cheapest Daihatsu Xenia, from 206.200,000 rupiah ($14,468) for the Toyota Avanza, and from 251,200,000 rupiah ($17,622) for the Toyota Veloz.
So why did Toyota decide to split the Veloz name from the Avanza? Yesterday, the 2022 Toyota Avanza made its global debut in Indonesia . The Veloz is also packed with more features compared to the standard Avanza. In the top-of-the-line variants, the Veloz comes with Toyota Safety Sense as standard. Since Toyota Motor Philippines currently offers the Avanza Veloz, there is a good chance they will also be offering the 2022 Veloz in the future.

At least, that’s the case in Thailand, where Toyota has just launched the “premium” version of its long-serving budget MPV. It’s now 205 mm longer, 70 mm wider and five millimetres taller at 4,395 mm long, 1,730 mm wide and 1,700 mm tall. Its wheelbase is also 95 mm longer at 2,750 mm. The Premium is also alone in getting the Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver assistance features.
