It’s sad for the Toyota Yaris, then, that it’s so easily beaten up on by others in its segment. When 10 is a Poor GradeFor starters, it’s impossible to ignore the Yaris LE’s subpar, 106-hp 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and wildly outdated standard four-speed automatic transmission. The tachometer we missed in our test car comes standard in the SE, as do LED running lights. The Yaris is an affordable car that might pass muster for Toyota loyalists, but the segment has moved on. Instead, we’d recommend the 2017 Yaris iA (née Mazda 2), already available as the 2016 Scion iA.
INGO BARENSCHEEIf you opt to outfit a new Toyota Yaris with an automatic transmission, it adds $725 or $800 to the bottom line. Toyota did a commendable job in most areas when it redesigned the Yaris for 2012. In a test earlier this year, a Yaris with a five-speed manual transmission clocked in at nine seconds flat from 0 to 60 mph. The manual Yaris gets there in 17 seconds at 81 mph; the slushy slushbox version is 1.1 seconds behind and 4 mph slower. That’s not true with the Yaris automatic, which has an old-fashioned conventional PRNDL dogleg shift gate that defies any manual manipulation that could even remotely be considered satisfying.

2009 Toyota Yaris 71For 2009, Toyota introduces a third body style to the Yaris lineup – a five-door hatchback. Also added in 2009 are standard anti-lock brakes, front seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear curtain side airbags for all Yaris models. Cruise Control is also now available for the liftback models (why it wasn’t available before is beyond me.) None of the styles are ugly in my opinion, and are certainly unmistakable as a Toyota Yaris.
